The New York Knicks soon may find themselves in a bind regarding the contract of free agent JR Smith, making it vital to find a replacement as soon as possible. With the NBA Draft right around the corner, the Knicks may have an opportunity to pick up 6-6 shooting guard out of the Providence, Ricardo Ledo.
Ledo has incredible size for the two-guard position, and he’s equipped with an array of offensive moves. His natural instincts make him capable of putting the ball in the basket efficiently, and that may turn out to be the perfect replacement for Smith. Although he’s not a proven NBA scorer like Smith, we still don’t know how high his ceiling truly is. On top of his ability to stretch the floor with his three-point shot, Ledo is willing to pass the ball because of his exceptional ball-handling skills and vision. The Providence shooting guard has shown plenty of potential in being a strong wing defender due to his high basketball IQ.
Although Ledo has deceptive athletic ability, you are not going to find the young guard jumping out of the gym. He’s not one of the strongest players in the draft, so questions will loom whether or not he’ll be able to get his shot off in the NBA against stronger, bigger, more physical defenders. Ledo has been accustomed to being the top option most of his young basketball career, so it will be interesting to see how he will adjust to being more of role player. Character concerns have been a problem recently, as he’s had some academic issues while he’s been at Providence.
Ledo’s upside is through the roof, but it’s yet to be seen how he will react to playing basketball at the highest level. When regarding the situation with Smith, It will be interesting to see if the Knicks will be looking to snatch up the shooting guard for insurance.
